Elderly Darlington Man Burgled

A 71-year-old Darlington man was attacked after burglars raided his home on Wednesday.

An elderly man was attacked and left lying on the floor in the rain after burglars raided his home.

The 71-year-old was returning to his home on Bowman Street, Darlington, at around 10.30pm on Wednesday 28th June when he noticed a man and woman inside the house.

As he approached his front door and started to go inside, the male suspect hit him, causing him to fall over the mobility scooter he was riding and hit the floor.

The two suspects then ran off with a quantity of cash, leaving the elderly man lying on the floor in the rain and unable to get up.

He was seen by a member of the public a few minutes later, who then called the police.

The victim was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

Detective Constable Richard Garrett, from Darlington CID said: “This was a cowardly attack on a vulnerable elderly man.

“We’d strongly encourage anyone who knows anything about the incident, or saw anything suspicious in the Bowman Road and Thompson Street West area of Darlington to get in touch.”
